The short film from Malas Entertainment explores hope, loss and a promise against the backdrop of 1870s California.
Gum Shan, a Malas Entertainment production, has won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Film at the 2026 New Wave AI Film Festival. Presented to Max Acchione in Santa Monica, California, on October 14, 2026, the award recognises achievement in cinematic storytelling and the art of AI filmmaking.
The recognition marks a significant moment for a film rooted in a painful chapter of Chinese immigrant history, and driven by a deeply personal premise:
“He came for gold. He stayed for a promise.”
A Promise in Gold Mountain
“Gum Shan,” meaning “Gold Mountain,” evokes the name Chinese migrants gave to a destination associated with opportunity and prosperity. For those who crossed the Pacific, California held the possibility of a new beginning. Yet the search for a better life often brought difficult labor, discrimination and violence.
Set in the 1870s, Gum Shan explores the distance between that promise and the realities of life in an unwelcoming place. Its central premise places a human commitment within this larger history, inviting audiences to consider what makes someone stay when the future they imagined begins to disappear.
Bringing a Painful History into Focus
The film draws on the history surrounding the burning of Antioch’s Chinatown in 1876. Chinese residents were driven out, and the destruction of their neighbourhood became part of a wider history of exclusion in California.
In 2021, 145 years later, the City of Antioch formally apologised to early Chinese immigrants and their descendants for the injustices committed against them. That acknowledgement brought renewed attention to the people whose experiences had too often been pushed to the margins.
Gum Shan approaches this history through images that suggest the everyday lives behind it: a labourer carrying baskets, a child’s face, a small doll held in a hand. Alongside scenes of fire and threatening torchlight, these details bring the stakes into intimate focus. A home is made of relationships, possessions and hopes; its destruction reaches far beyond the loss of buildings.
Contemporary Tools, Human Creative Direction
Gum Shan brings AI-assisted production into a historical setting. Made with AI and directed, edited, scored and mixed by hand, the film combines emerging visual tools with human creative decisions.
Its subject gives those decisions particular weight. The rhythm of an edit, the choice of an image and the placement of music all shape how an audience encounters the story. Here, those choices serve a premise concerned with belonging, vulnerability and the responsibility of a promise.
The Grand Jury Prize recognises the film’s cinematic storytelling alongside its use of AI filmmaking. For Malas Entertainment, the award marks an important milestone for the production and an opportunity to introduce Gum Shan to a wider audience.

At its heart, the film asks what remains worth holding onto when opportunity gives way to uncertainty. Its tagline offers a compelling place to begin: a journey that starts with the search for gold becomes a story about keeping a promise.
